Whether through botanical painting, illustration, or natural dyeing, my work begins with careful observation of plants, landscapes, and the quiet stories they carry. I am inspired by the relationships between nature, culture, and memory, creating artwork that celebrates both beauty and meaning. Each commission is thoughtfully developed in close collaboration with clients, resulting in artwork that is personal, timeless, and deeply connected to place. Seoul) | Artist and educator based in Baltimore &amp; New York Rosa Chang is a Korean American artist, illustrator, educator, and founder of Rosaful Garden Studio and Indigo Shade Map. Her work explores the relationship between humans and the natural world through materials, process, and storytelling. Drawing inspiration from plants, traditional craft, and cultural heritage, she creates across painting, illustration, natural dye, paper, textiles, and community-based projects. Her current practice centers on sharing the cultural significance of Korean and Asian natural dye traditions while exploring how art can foster ecological awareness, cross-cultural dialogue, and meaningful connections with nature. Through exhibitions, workshops, public programs, and collaborative projects, she invites audiences to engage with the natural world through creativity and slow, hands-on making. Rosa teaches at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York. She is also the creator of Indigo Shade Map, an international educational initiative connecting natural dye practitioners, gardens, museums, and communities around the world. Previously, she served as Executive Director of Hand Papermaking, Inc., where she supported the global hand papermaking community through publications, educational programs, and collaborations. In May 2023, Rosa published her award-winning debut picture book, My Indigo World, which she both wrote and illustrated. The book was recognized as a 2023 New York Public Library Best Book and a 2024 NSTA–CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book. This film captures the entire process of creating his portrait on a cotton handkerchief, serving as both a memorial to Fletcher and a healing journey for me in the wake of this loss. Indigo dyeing, a practice deeply rooted in spiritual and restorative qualities, guides this artistic tribute. The portrait-making process incorporates soy paste resist and natural indigo dyeing techniques at Blue Light Junction in Baltimore, Maryland. I used indigo pigment in paste form, extracted from fresh Polygonum tinctorium leaves grown by urban farmers in Baltimore. For this work, I relied on a naturally fermented indigo vat enriched with madder root. &nbsp;This short documentary film is currently available for viewing on the Indigo Shade Map YouTube Channel here. For exhibitions, I can submit a file of the film. Those plants were planting in my tiny backyard in Brooklyn from April to August, harvested in between August through September, and seeds were collected in late october in 2018.
