I developed the workshop curriculum to be interconnected with Korean language & culture with indigo dyeing processes. I selected 5 different words representing “Indigo” in Korean language and made them as hand-cut stencils.
“우리" (Woori)= “Us”
“사랑" (Sa rang) = “Love”
“쪽" (Jjok) = “Indigo”
“지구"(Ji gu) = “Earth”
“평화" (Pyeong hwa) = “Peace”

Eco Friendly Indigo Art Making Workshop
Date: Saturday, June 3rd
Time: 10:00 a.m - 2:00 p.m
Class Duration: 4 hours (30 mins lunch break)
Location: Blue Light Junction- 209 McAllister Street, Baltimore, MD 21202

This workshop commences with a serene tea time, offering participants the opportunity to delve into the enchanting world of "My Indigo World," a recently published picture book. We will explore the original artworks featured in the book, showcasing two distinctive painting techniques on fabric: hand-stitched shibori and soy paste resist. These techniques have a rich tradition in East Asia, encompassing China, Japan, and Korea.

Participants will immerse themselves in the fundamentals of Korean indigo, which thrives abundantly in Baltimore. The focus will be on mastering hand-stitched shibori and the soy paste resist technique. All necessary dyeing materials will be readily supplied during the session. Each participant is encouraged to bring a small fabric item crafted from natural fibers, providing an opportunity to apply either soy paste or shibori stitching patterns. It's an ideal occasion to personalize short-sleeve t-shirts and tote bags with the magic of indigo dye!

As a token of appreciation, all participants will receive baby indigo seedlings to nurture and cultivate, marking the launch of "My Indigo World." Additionally, signed copies of the book will be available for purchase upon request. This workshop promises a blend of creativity, tradition, and the joy of crafting your own indigo-infused creations.

Book Reading & Indigo Dye Demonstration
@ Manor Woods Elementry School in Ellicott City, Maryland

I had such a blessing time with around 250 students of 3rd and 4th grade students at Manor Woods Elementry School in Ellicott City. My little indigo vat, some original illustrations, and copies of My Indigo World came along with me. It was amazing to see how young students are so excited about Korean heritage, diverse cultural aspects of indigo and learn more about the fermentation & oxidation processes when the indigo dyed fabric color turns from yellow to green to BLUE! Receiving genuine compliments from those children made me so happy and to look back why I decided to make the book.
